AI, Diamond Grading and the Future of Jewelry
Interview with Pritesh Patel, CEO of GIA
Artificial intelligence is becoming a tool in diamond grading, but it has not replaced gemologists at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
In the latest episode of Pressing Matters with Avi Krawitz, GIA CEO Pritesh Patel said the organization’s AI system is now used across its grading laboratories to support consistency and quality assessment. Human expertise remains essential for complex stones, including fancy-color diamonds and the detection of new treatments, where the technology and available data may not yet be sufficient. Patel described GIA’s approach as combining scientific knowledge, gemological experience and technology.
Patel also discussed GIA’s decision to introduce a separate grading system for laboratory-grown diamonds in October 2025, using “premium” and “standard” categories instead of the four Cs. He said the four Cs were developed to describe the natural variation found in diamonds, while laboratory-grown diamonds are manufactured products whose qualities can be produced more consistently as technology advances.
Looking ahead, Patel said demand for jewelry is growing, even as the mix of materials and products changes. He sees an opportunity for GIA to extend its role in stimulating consumer confidence beyond loose gemstones, through jewelry grading and verification, services for pre-owned pieces, and traceability. GIA’s aim, he said, is to provide trusted information throughout a diamond, gemstone or a piece of jewelry’s life cycle, from its sale and appraisal to redesign or resale.
