Shirley Bassey & The Legacy of Diamonds Are Forever

Sotheby's auctioned jewelry from the collection of Dame Shirley Bassey tomorrow as part of its Fine Jewels sale in Paris. Of course, it was Bassey who sang the iconic theme song 'Diamonds Are Forever' for the 1971 Bond film of the same title. 


Among the 80 pieces that will go under the hammer is a 1960s Van Cleef & Arpels ring that Elton John gifted Bassey after she sang at an Aids benefit. For me, though, the sale conjures up a nostalgia for my love of the old 007 movies and for a time when diamonds had a knack for creating iconic moments in pop culture.
