The Diamond Collective, Botswana’s Diamond Story and EU Green Rules
We’re back after a brief holiday hiatus, and there were some interesting industry developments and events while we were away.
For one, the long-awaited Natural Diamond Council campaign under new CEO Amber Pepper was unveiled. Rather than a consumer campaign, however, the organization introduced a new identity: The Diamond Collective. I share my thoughts in my latest Diamond Minute: The Diamond Collective Unveiled.
As suggested in the video, it has prompted me to refer to natural diamonds simply as diamonds, leaving the descriptors to the synthetics industry. That makes sense to me, although it does require some intent after being conditioned, over a relatively short period, to use the word “natural.”
My feeling is that the naturalness of diamonds is implicit in the word itself. I’m curious what you think. Is this something we should commit to?
Poll
Should the word “diamond” refer exclusively to natural diamonds?
Yes, synthetic diamonds should always carry a descriptor
Yes, but “natural diamond” still has a role in some contexts
No, both products should be described equally
I’m undecided / context matters
It is not an issue, the terminology does not matter
